Adze--a vampire spirit that dwells in parts of Southeastern Ghana and Southern Togo in Africa. It is told the Adze flies around in the form of a firefly and, if caught, changes into a human. It drinks blood, palm oil, and coconut water, and it preys on children.
Algul--an Arabic vampire that normally takes the form of a female. Translated, ‘Algul' means ‘Horse Leech,' or bloodsucking demon. The Algul feasts upon dead babies and inhabited cemeteries.
Alp--a German vampire spirit, associated with the bogeyman and the Incubus, normally tormenting the dreams and nightmares of women. The Alp is considered male and is connected with nightmares. Sometimes it is the spirit of a recently deceased relative, most often an actual demon. Children can become an Alp when the mother uses a horse collar to ease childbirth. During the middle ages the Alp was said to appear as a cat, pig, or bird, or sometimes a demon dog, thus linking it to werewolf legends. Because it is involved with the terrors in nightmares, the Alp is impossible to kill.
Aswang--a fearsome vampire from the Philippines, believed to be a beautiful woman by day and a fearsome flying being by night. It prefers to feed on children. If an Aswang licks a person's shadow, it is said that person will soon meet their death.
Bruxsa--a Portuguese vampire, said to always be female. The Bruxsa is usually transformed to a vampire by witchcraft. She leaves her home at night in the form of a bird, and her activity is tormenting lost travelers. She is said to appear as a beautiful maiden and leads a normal human life by day, but if she bears any children, she consumes them.
Chordewa--found among the Oraons, capable of turning into the form of a vampire cat. It is said if she licks a person's lips they will die soon after.
Danag--a Filipino vampire, said to be responsible for planting taro on the islands long ago. The Danag worked with humans for many years, but the partnership ended when a woman cut her finger and a Danag sucked her wound, enjoying the taste so much that it drained her body completely of blood. Dhampir--a half-vampire, half-Moroi vampire mix from Russia. Can only be created when a Moroi and Dhampir mate, Dhampirs can't have children unless with Moroi. Generally, because of hardiness, are guardians of Moroi to protect from Strigoi. (Seen in the Vampire Academy Series, by Richelle Mead)
Dracul-- Transylvanian vampire, the most famous of all. Said to be based on Vladimir Tepes, the impaler. (1st seen and mentioned in Dracula, by Bram Stoker.)
Ekimmu--one of the most feared of ancient vampires, among the Assyrians and the Babylonians. It is said to be a departed spirit, unable to find peace. The creature, unable to find peace and wanders the earth, waits to attack. There are many ways in which a person can become an Ekimmu; among these were violent/premature deaths, unfulfilled love and an improper burial.
Estrie--said to be a Hebrew spirit, always female, assuming the shape of a vampire. The Estrie live among humanity to satisfy its need for blood. Its favorite prey is children, though it's said no one's safe when the Estrie feeds.
Incubus--one of the most famous forms of vampires, the male form of the Succubus, the Incubus visits women at night. Makes love to them and torments their dreams. It possesses all characteristics of the vampire, with nightly visits to its victims. Draining life from them, and showing strength and extreme sexual desire. Like vampires found among the Gypsy and Slavic communities, it can father children. (mentioned/seen in the Twilight Saga, by Stephenie Meyer)
Kuang-shi--a Chinese vampire, caused by the demonic possession by a recently deceased corpse. Said to have a terrifying appearance, as it matures and gains new skills, the older among them are rumored to have the ability to fly.
Lamia--Libyan vampire. According to legend, Lamia was a Queen of Libya and all of her children were slain by the Goddess Hera. She is said to seduce men into sex then devour them in a gruesome fashion. Also is mentioned as the only kind of born vampire.(Mentioned in the Night World Series, by L.J. Smith)
Mara--a Slavic vampire, also found in legends of the Kashybe people of Canada. Said to be the spirit of an un-baptized dead girl. She is considered to be a terrible night visitor who crushes and oppresses her victims in their sleep. Possibly where the term ‘Nightmare' came from. In Slavic legend, once the Mara drinks the blood of a man, she will fall in love with him and return to terrorize his slumbers until his death.
Moroi--a Russian vampire, a born vampire. Can be born from Strigoi or Moroi, a mortal vampire. Can live on blood or human food, but generally both. Mortal Enemy of the Strigoi, on the side of good.
Nelapsi--a Slovak vampire. A creature so strong and fast it could massacre an entire village after midnight. (mentioned in the Twilight Saga, by Stephenie Meyer)
Nosferatu--the most famous vampire. A Romanian species of vampire, the illegitimate child of parents who were also illegitimate. Soon after its burial, the Nosferatu embarks on a long career of destruction. It delights in tormenting and engaging in wild orgies of the living. The Nosferatu can father children. The vampire hates newly married couples due to its own illegitimacy, and wreaks havoc on such couples, by making the groom impotent and the bride barren. The Nosferatu is also said to have an awful order and is hideous.
Stregoni benefici--an Italian vampire, said to be on the side of goodness, and a mortal enemy of all evil vampires. (Mentioned/seen in Twilight Saga, by Stephenie Meyer)
Strigoii (Strigoi)--another infamous Italian vampire. There are several ways to become a Strigoii, including being the seventh son and suicide. Generally said to be friendly towards Gypsies. Known to have a red ring around pupil. (Seen in the Vampire Academy Series, by Richelle Mead) Mortal enemy of Moroi.
Succubus--a female vampire, a fiend that visits men in their sleep to torment their dreams and engage them in sex. The Succubus could render the victim totally exhausted by its pursuit of carnal pleasure and possibly killing them in its escapades. (Seen in the Succubus Series by Richelle Mead and mentioned in the Twilight Saga, by Stephenie Meyer)
Upier--a Polish vampire that is unusual due to the fact it rises at midday and returns to sleep at midnight. It is said to have a barbed tongue and consumes vast amounts of blood. This creature's fascination with blood goes much further than normal vampires that it is said to sleep in blood as well.
Upyr--a Russian vampire, said to be extremely vicious. It will first attack children, then kill their parents. As with the Upier, the Upyr rises during the day and sleeps at night, leading it to be fairly human-like.
Varacolaci--a Romanian vampire. A powerful undead being who could appear as a beautiful, pale-skinned human. (Mentioned in the Twilight Saga, by Stephenie Meyer)
Zemu--a vampiric figure found in Moldavia. It takes the form of a flame and enters the room of a young girl or widow. Once inside, the flame becomes a man who seduces the young girl or widow.
